What is Ashtanga Yoga?

Two Sanskrit words, "Ashta" and "Anga" together form the meaning of "Ashtanga", where "Ashta" refers to "Eight" and "Anga" refers to "Limbs". Therefore, "Ashtanga Yoga" is known as the "Eight Limb Approached Yoga". The Eight Limbs of Ashtanga Yoga are mentioned and described in Patanjali Yoga Sutras. These are:

1. Yama:

Yama means to control. It teaches ethical standards that are highly beneficial for our overall health. The five Yamas are

  • Ahimsa: Non-violence
  • Satya: Truth
  • Asteya: Non-stealing
  • Brahmacharya: Celibacy
  • Aparigraha: Non-covetousness

2. Niyamas:

Niyamas in English means "Rules". There are some rules which we need to follow for ourselves. The five niyamas, mentioned in Patanjali Yoga Sutras are -

शौचसंतोषतपःस्वाध्यायेश्वरप्रणिधानानि नियमाः॥ (Sutra 32 of Chapter 2)

Meaning:

The five niyamas (observances) are

  • Shaucha - Internal and External Purification
  • Santosha - Contentment
  • Tapah - Austerity
  • Svadhyay - Self Study
  • Ishvara Pranidhanani - Devotion to God

3. Asanas :

Asanas mean "Physical Postures". But it should be noted that not all physical postures are considered Asanas. As per Patanjali Yoga Sutras,

स्थिरसुखमासनम् ॥ (Sutra 46 of Chapter 2)

Meaning:

Physical postures that are comfortable to perform and are steady are considered Asanas.

It is an important part of yoga, meditation and other spiritual practice as it prepares the body for further practice. Asanas are the starting step of learning yoga.

4. Pranayama:

Pranayama is the practice of breathing and is also known as "Breath Control". The Sanskrit word "Prana" means "Life Force" or "Breath" and "Yama" refers to "Control". The definition of Pranayama is found in Patanjali Yoga Sutras which explained it as the right technique for retention and splitting of breath.

5. Pratyahara :

Pratyahara is defined as the stage when the mind or the senses withdraw connection from the external aspects. In this, the mind focuses only on inner consciousness. The regular practice of it makes it easier to control the mind or senses.

The five layers of inner consciousness or "Pancha Kosha" of an individual are -

  • Annamaya Kosha - the food layer
  • Pranamaya Kosha - the breath layer
  • Manomaya Kosha - the mind layer
  • Vijnyanmaya Kosha - the intellect layer
  • Anandamaya Kosha - the bliss layer

6. Dharana :

Dharana means to focus on a single point. It refers to concentration. The mind of an individual is always engaged in some thoughts and changes frequently. After practicing Dharana regularly, an individual can be able to build focus on a single aspect. To achieve this state, one can practice Mantra Chanting or Meditation.

7. Dhyana :

Dhyana or Meditation is the state when the mind is still. It helps in achieving the utmost rest and relaxation.

8. Samadhi :

The last stage of Consciousness is known as Samadhi. It is also known as Contemplation where you are disconnected from all other thoughts and are just aware of your hidden powers and positive thoughts. It let you connect with your true nature, joy, love, and strength.

When an individual is able to get connected with the four external limbs, i.e. Yama, Niyamas, Asanas, and Pranayama; then the other four (Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi) evolve.

The continuous practice of Ashtanga Yoga brings physical, mental, and emotional benefits. It also heals the body, mind, and soul completely.
