Vata

The nature of Vata is fickle, cold, transparent, light and dry. It is believed to be responsible for changes in body odour, movement, and impulsivity. Vata is very important as it controls the other two doshas and fulfils the bodily functions of the body. Although Vata is present in all the cells of the body, the amount of Vata in the body varies according to its distribution in different places and organs of the body. For example, Vata is mainly seen in the joints, large intestine (colon), ear bones, shoulder muscles and lower back.

Pitta

Pitta is described as sourness, moisture, heat, energy, and fire. The main function of pitta is to control various metabolic processes and regulate hormones in the body. Like Vata, Pitta is also present in all the cells of the body but its action and quantity vary according to different places and organs. For example, the liver, heart, skin, stomach, pancreas and spleen are the major sites of pitta. Pitta helps to regulate thirst, body heat, level of intelligence, vision, metabolism and calmness.

Kapha

The words used in Ayurveda to describe Kapha are calm, soft, moist, thin, heavy and stable. It helps in joint stability and maintains moisture, endurance and strength in the body. It also improves body firmness and helps in distributing body weight proportionally. Like the other two doshas, ​​Kapha is present in all cells of the body, but in different amounts in different places and organs. For example, Kapha is mainly found in the synovial membrane of the chest, joints, tongue and brain. Kapha rids the body of excess heat through fat, skin, moisture, lungs, faeces and urine.
