The above shloka is taken from Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Chapter 4, Verse 23. It is one of the important texts written on yoga.

The shloka tells the importance of breathing practice in the present times. To create a connection with the mind, it is necessary to do Pranayama regularly.

What is Pranayama?

The definition of pranayama is changed in recent times. People twisted it to make it interesting. The real meaning of Pranayama gets hidden behind modernism. The true definition of Pranayama comes up with the amalgamation of two words, "Prana" meaning "Life Force (Breath)" & "Yama" meaning "Control". It defines Pranayama as the Control of Breath (Life Practice).

What is Prana?

Prana, the most important aspect of Pranayama is the life force in an individual. It is energy that resides in every individual which determines your emotional, mental, and physical processes. It is the foundation of life. Everything that exists inside and around us has prana.

Prana is a strong connection that forms between the mind and the spiritual consciousness. It manages the physical functions of the body. There are many processes including Breathing practice, supply of oxygen, purification, filtration, and so on are done and managed by Prana.

Types of Prana

The human body has five types of prana. Different pranas perform different roles in the mechanism of the body. When one builds a hold in all these 5 pranas then one becomes free from pain and ailments. Here, we are discussing Pancha Vayus.

Prana Vayu

Prana determines our self-being. It directly affects our thoughts. How our mindset is? What do we think? What we are planning? All these activities are being determined by Prana. The energy of prana flows from the nostrils to the heart. One can activates it with some types of Pranayama such as Bhastrika Pranayama, Nadi Shodhana Pranayama and Ujjayi Pranayama.

Udana Vayu

The throat of the human body is the location of Udana Vayu. It is a bridge between Prana Vayu and Vyana Vayu. The main function of Udana Vayu is to awaken the Kundalini Energy which is hidden inside us. When this type of Vayu, is balanced, one becomes determined and passionate. Udana Vayu gets activated by Ujjayi Pranayama, Bhramari Pranayama, and Viparitakarani Mudra.

Samana Vayu

The location of Samana Vayu is naval of the human body. Its main function of it is to control digestion and other abdomen-related functions. It manages the gastrointestinal tract and digestion process. The function of the lunges to observe oxygen is also done by Samana Vayu. To strengthen this, the practice of Agnisara Kriya and Nauli is done.

Vyana Vayu

The location of Vyana Vayu is the heart and lungs of the Human Body. You think and then execute is the function of the body. Moreover, it also manages the circulation of the body at all levels. It also governs the movement of food, water and oxygen in the body. The feelings and emotions are also governed by Vyana Vayu. Kumbhaka is the practice done to activate Vyana Vayu.

Apana Vayu

The core of the pelvic of the human body is the location of Apana Vayu. Its function of it is the filtration and purification of the body by the timely discharge of urine, menstrual fluid in females, stool, and so. Apana Vayu also eliminates negative emotions and experiences. Some of the practices to activate Apana Vayu are Nauli, Agnisara Kriya, Ashvini Mudra and Mula Bandha.

5 Days Pranayama Retreat at Real Happiness India

The 5 days of Pranayama Retreat in Rishikesh conducted by Real Happiness India covers all theoretical and practical aspects with a properly designed schedule or timetable.

Day - 1

10:30 AM - 11 AM 15 minutes theory class with a 15 minutes practice class

The Pranayama Retreat starts with an indoor practice of 30 minutes. The 30 minutes will be given to the practice of Pranayama. To make it more refreshing, windows are opened for better ventilation and fresh air.

11 AM - 01 PM Visit to Tapovan Waterfall

Tapovan Waterfall is a beautiful and serene location in Rishikesh. The place is yet not much explored by travelers and tourists. After the pranayama class of half-hour, students are taken for a visit to practice an outdoor pranayama session while cherishing the beauty of the place. A pranayama teacher will go along to explain the basics and principles of pranayama. He/She also ensures that students are doing the class with perfection.

06 PM - 07 PM Pranayama Class at Garden or Rooftop

The evening 1-hour class of Pranayam is done either at the Garden or the Terrace of Real Happiness India. The logic behind doing an outdoor class is getting fresh air in an open space. It makes Pranayama's class more beneficial and soothing.

Day - 2

10:30 AM - 11 AM 15 minutes theory class with a 15 minutes practice class

Day 2 at Real Happiness India starts with a combination of theoretical and practical classes of 15 minutes each. The total duration is of 30 minutes and indoor pranayama practice with open windows is done during this time period.

11 AM - 01 PM Visit to Nim Beach

The 2 hours from 11 AM to 1 PM is scheduled for an outdoor excursion. The excursion takes place to Nim Beach. It is a beautiful sand beach with a scenic view of high mountains, covered with dense greenery. The fast-flowing river water of the Ganges makes the place divine and serene. An outdoor pranayama session is done at the beach under the guidance of a Pranayama teacher.

06 PM - 07 PM Pranayama Class at Garden or Rooftop

The evening class of 1 hour at the Garden or Rooftop is done amidst the scenic view of the school. Practicing a Pranayama class in an open space gives dual benefits, the view calms the soul while the fresh air makes the practice more perfect.

Day - 3

10:30 AM - 11 AM 15 minutes theory class with a 15 minutes practice class

Half an hour practice of indoor pranayama is the starting class of Day 3 of Pranayama Retreat in Rishikesh. During the practice, the windows are opened providing morning fresh air.

11 AM - 01 PM Visit to Vashishta Cave

Vashishta Cave is at some distance from our school. It is a peaceful place with a small temple of Lord Shiva, a serene beach nearby the Ganges, a small cave, and premises. Practicing Pranayama here is surely beneficial for you as the place is divine and tranquil. A pranayama teacher goes with you to ensure your right practice.

06 PM - 07 PM Pranayama Class at Garden or Rooftop

The evening class of 1 hour is practised at the Garden or Rooftop of Real Happiness. The school is surrounded by dense trees, which means, that your open pranayama practice benefits you with fresh air.

Day - 4

Morning Trek to Kunjapuri

There is a little change in the schedule for Day 4. The morning trek to Kunjapuri temple offers a panoramic view of Sunrise. To make you experience this divinity, Day 4 of Pranayama Retreat starts early morning with a sunrise trek. Kunjapuri Temple is one of the Shaktipeeths, located in Narendranagar. The short trek takes you to the temple.

The outdoor class will be held at Kunjapuri Temple under the teachings of the Pranayama Teacher. He/She will go with you and explain the practice of Pranayama.

Indoor Class 15 minutes theory class with a 15 minutes practice class

After the outdoor excursion and pranayama session, the 30 minutes of indoor pranayama class is held at Real Happiness India. The time for the class will be decided according to the first session of Kunjapuri Temple.

06 PM - 07 PM Pranayama Class at Garden or Rooftop

The last pranayama class of Day 4 is done in the Garden or Rooftop of Real Happiness. 1-hour session of pranayama in Rishikesh is practiced in an open space offering fresh air making the pranayama more beneficial.

Day - 5

10:30 AM - 11 AM 15 minutes theory class with a 15 minutes practice class

15 minutes explanation of pranayama is done with a 15-minute practice of Pranayama at Real Happiness India. Located in a green and lush space near Ramjhula, the school is covered with greenery all around. So, when windows are opened, proper ventilation and fresh air make pranayama class, a refreshing one.

11 AM - 01 PM Visit to Beatles Ashram

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ashram gets famous with the name, "Beatles Ashram" after the visit of the famous band, "The Beatles". It is the best practice for yoga, meditation, pranayama, and other spiritual practices. Also, it is one of the most visited photogenic places in Rishikesh. The pranayama teacher will come with you on the day of the outdoor visit to the Beatles Ashram. He will teach the Pranayama sessions there.

06 PM - 07 PM Pranayama Class at Garden or Rooftop

1-hour evening class of Pranayama in Rishikesh on the last day of Retreat is done either in the Garden or on the rooftop of the school. The idea behind the outdoor evening class is to offer you fresh air for inhalation and exhalation.
